Movies and Christmas go hand in hand like Turkey and stuffing. In fact, there’s nothing better to get you in a festive mood than getting under a blanket with a cup of tea for a Christmas film. So to encourage you to get excited for all those Christmas presents you’ll be opening here’s our Top 10 Christmas Movies.

1. Home Alone (1990)

Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without that 8-year old scamp Kevin McAllister and his battle against evil washing machines and bumbling burglars. Child cruelty this is but Home Alone is as much a Christmas tradition as a mid-afternoon Christmas Day snooze and inevitable mince pie gauge. And we love it.

2. It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

They knew how to tell a festive tale back in those days didn’t they?! A hearty story of good will and Christmas cheer in the face of impending doom, It’s A Wonderful Life is as warm and comforting as a pair of fleece lined socks.

3. A Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton’s wonderful stop motion musical is a dark take on the festive period we all know and love. Jack, a stick insect of a man with a skull for a head, fancies his himself in Santa’s job but his ghoulish ways are a bit too much for Christmas Town. I mean come on, who wants a severed head for a present?

4. Elf (2003)

As funny as Santa Clause in a pink suit and matching tiara, Elf is one of the most enjoyable Christmas films to have ever been released. Jammed packed with plenty of a ridiculous moments, including a fight with a mistaken Elf, Will Ferrell’s Elf is perfect Xmas viewing.

5. Muppet’s Christmas Carol (1992)

Everyone’s favourite stuffed rouges run riot in this early-90s adaptation of Charles Dickins’ classic tale, with British legend Michael Caine starring as Scrooge. Staying loyal to the original tale, there’s plenty of slap stick banter, mild violence and sing-a-longs from Brian Henson’s famous puppets.

6. White Christmas (1954)

As smooth as a roll around in a silk factory made from silk, Bing Crosby is THE daddy in this Christmas film of Christmas films. Breaking into song at any given moment, we’re treated to a back catalogue of suave numbers from King of Baritone himself. And the film ain’t half bad as well!

7. Die Hard (1988)

Just when you thought things were a little bit too Christmassy and happy, along came a group of German terrorists to seriously mess up your day. Well, not your day…but certainly John McClane’s . Queue guns, bombs and plenty of one liners in a Christmas action film full of attitude.

8. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

With enough cheese to put Dairylea out of business, Miracle on 34th Street is a tale of one girl’s unwavering faith in Santa. And with British acting legend Richard Attenborough playing the portly gift bringing man himself, this film has everything you need for a feel good evening in front of the box.

9. The Grinch (2000)

What do you do if you’re green and mean, and hate Christmas! Steal it…of course. And that’s just what the Grinch did. This green and furry villain, played brilliantly by Jim Carrey, hates Christmas so much that he makes it a priority to destroy the spirit of Christmas anyway he can.

10. Scrooged (1988)

A modern (well, it was then) adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol minus the puppets and singing. Bill Murray plays a heartless and greedy television executive with no time or love for Christmas other than the financial gain he can take from it. So, naturally, it’s the job of a few spirits to put him straight.
